About this project

Nestled within one of the most romantic gardens in Cornwall is the historic gate lodge at Trematon Castle, a Grade II* listed Duchy estate. Working closely with the castle custodians and founders of House of Hackney, Frieda Gormley and Javvy M. Royle, this was a collaborative project to create luxury hospitality using House of Hackney’s new season collection of wallpapers, fabrics, and paints. This project birthed an exciting collaboration with Huckleberry, an award-winning handmade kitchen company based in the Cotswolds. We tried to create a timeless, almost ‘free-standing’ kitchen that was both beautiful and would stand the test of time as a holiday cottage kitchen. A handmade banquette covered in House of Hackney’s Blackthorn by William Morris adds a comfy, cosy corner next to the log-burning fire amongst locally sourced antiques. Upstairs, you find a riot of colour and print beneath a ceiling of hollyhocks, with a Victorian patchwork quilt dressing the four-poster bed. The walls are decorated with treasures we found travelling the markets of Mexico, giving the walls a sense of Latin American spirit, alongside House of Hackney snake mirrors. In the main bathroom, to create a separate powder room, we installed antique medieval doors that echo the design of other medieval artefacts on the estate’s grounds. This includes the abandoned temple shipped over from Rajasthan, which now forms the pool house flanking the outdoor pool, which is part of the guest experience. The lodge has been a huge success as an enterprise, has been featured in Condé Nast Traveller, and is an Airbnb ‘Guest Favourite’.
